Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve (shared with Mpumalanga)

Part of Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTFCA), a transboundary conservation area linking South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe

Spanning 2.5 million hectares, this biosphere reserve, ranked as the best in Africa, links the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park and surrounding communities. It plays a critical role as a biodiversity corridor, water regulator, and carbon sink, yet expansion of agriculture, poaching, and invasive species pose threats. Restoration under ReLISA will strengthen corridor connectivity, promote sustainable land management, and support biodiversity monitoring. With its global tourism profile, the reserve offers opportunities in eco-tourism, carbon markets, and biodiversity credits. The long-term goal is to achieve a resilient socio-ecological system where conservation and livelihoods mutually reinforce each other.
