Northern Drakensberg SWSA

Part of Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area (with Lesotho)

Part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area, the Northern Drakensberg secures water for downstream cities and agriculture. Its montane grasslands provide biodiversity habitat, carbon storage, and soil stabilisation. Erosion, overgrazing, and invasive species remain pressing challenges. ReLISA supports grass reseeding, alien clearing, and sustainable grazing practices. Payment for ecosystem services, eco-tourism, and water funds provide investment pathways. Looking ahead, protecting this “water factory” will be central to both regional climate resilience and long-term livelihood stability.
